Today is our last day here in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.. leaving to London this afternoon. I can't wait to see the metropolitan city and the place that people been talking about. But before leaving Wakefield town, we had a picnic at the ruined of Sandal Castle. Dropped by at the M&S in the highway to buy some food stuff and we proceed.
My last photo taken in Woolley.. Sandal Castle stands in a commanding position overlooking the River Calder. The castle is best known for the famous Battle of Wakefield which was fought nearby in 1460 during the Wars of the Roses. Richard, Duke of York was killed in the battle.
To Sandal Castle for a short lunch picnic. The ruined and remains of Sandal Castle.. View from Sandal Castle, Wakefield.
Remains of the 13th century stone castle and the fine motte and bailey can be seen on site. We can climb to the top of the motte where we will be treated to superb views of the Calder Valley, a perfect place for picnic.
Some food stuff we bought from Mark & Spencer supermarket.. Having fun picnic under the sun with a cold breeze of West Yorshire.. We catch a train at 12.15pm to London from Westgate Station in Wakefield. It is sad to leave Joe and the town but at the same time I was so excited to see more England have to offer especially in London. The journey took us about 2 hours and we been sleeping in the train all the way to Kings Cross Station in London city.
Ready for departure to London.. While in the train..
Wow! I couldn't believe myself that I finally be in London! Upon arriving at the Kings Cross Station, we walk out of the busy station to breath the London air.. and I was so so excited! But I was scared too.. I just don't know where to start. Been looking at the train map several times and I got myself mixed-up! :(
Finally reached Kings Cross Station, London.. I don't know weather to take the subway or taxi to the hotel.. I was thinking, I might be cheated by the taxi driver and drive me around, and end up paying expensive taxi fare (London taxi fare is the most expensive in the world!) or taking the subway and don't know which train line to take to Paddington and will get lost in this big city! After a while thinking and having my cigarette, we decided to take the taxi (with 2 of our big and heavy luggages!).
In the famous Black Cab. Devonshire Terrace, Paddington, London.
Finally arrived at the Glendale Hotel in Devonshire Terrace after 15 minutes drive from the train station. The taxi driver was very friendly and it cost us GBP11.00 for the fare.. OK. But if you think twice, hmm.. it is very expensive to pay RM55.00 for 15 minutes taxi ride, right?! (I just couldn't stop thinking about converting the currency).
After check-in, we decided to walk around the area and realized that this hotel is located very near to the Hyde Park.. so, that is a good sign. I grabbed my map and the first thing I saw was Harrods.. just across the Hyde Park. The Royal Albert Hall is also located very nearby. Then we started to explore this new place and seeing new people.
Our room.. such a small hotel room! In front of the hotel building.. I was so excited and been walking around this big city.. managed to take the subway (and still mixed-up each time I looked at the train map!), seeing many interesting buildings and people. But the first thing that I walk to is to Knightsbridge, to Harrods.. was so excited to be in this building after all this while been looking in the picture and finally I was in this prestige store!
Royal Albert Hall. Harrods! Summer sales in Harrods! Taking a break while on the way back in Hyde Park.. But the best part of the day was finding out that there is a Malaysian restaurant, Tuk Din Restaurant just around the corner from our hotel. Me and Zahir decided to have our dinner there after almost 5 days been eating like a Mat Salleh and the food was not bad.. same goes for the prices in the menu. End of day one in London and planning for tomorrow.. to explore more of this interesting city.
Tuk Din Restaurant at 41, Craven Road, Paddington, Greater London.
